Prescription for Your Skin Type: Dry Skin Type

Your skin can change over time. You may have had oily, acne-prone skin as a teen only to find your skin becomes quite dry as an adult. This may be due to hormone fluctuations, sun damage, poor hydration, or less than optimal eating habits that exclude essential fatty acids and other healthy fats. You may also find your skin shifts its type with the season as cooler temperatures dry you out.

To help our patients take charge of their own skin care, we’re sharing protocols that we use on ourselves. There’s a lot out there so it’s good to get specifics so you can decide what’s most effective for you.

Dr. Robin Evans

With dry skin you may see a dull, rough complexion with red patches, more lines and wrinkles, or less elasticity. You’d never know Dr. Evans has dry skin because she takes her self care very seriously. Here are her secrets for glowing, youthful skin.

A.M. Routine: First Thing in the Morning


After showering, Dr. Evans applies SoCo Manuka Cream on dry or itchy patches on the body and SoCo Skin Free Skin Lotion on her arms and legs.


She also washes her face with the gentle yet strong SoCo Glycolic Cream Wash. The 5% unbuffered glycolic acid it contains moisturizes while acting as a mild exfoliant. It’s important to apply a small amount, gently massaging the cleanser into wet skin, and rinsing it off thoroughly.


With her face as a clean slate, Dr. Evans first dabs on SoCo Skin Free Eye Serum. This product contains powerful antioxidants as well as hyaluronic acid, the ultimate ingredient for moisture retention. Since the eyes are THE point of contact with the world, repairing and protecting the delicate skin that surrounds them is a top priority.


Dr. Evans then applies SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum to the rest of her face AND her neck—never forget your neck! Containing antioxidants and growth factors, this serum diminishes fine lines and age spots while improving texture and tone. It also helps the skin tighten, restore, and fight environmental damage.


To protect the delicate skin on her neck and décolletage (the upper chest), Dr. Evans also applies Nectifirm cream in the morning (and in the evening).


When Dr. Evans plans to be outdoors, she uses Elta MD UV Facial. Specifically designed for the face, its light, fluffy formulation does not clog pores with excessively heavy oils or other ingredients. This refreshing formula moisturizes while it provides protection from the sun’s damaging UV rays—critical since the face is exposed to the elements every day. Gently massage or dab on with two fingers. Do not rub or pull at your skin when applying this or any product.

OR if she’s headed straight to the office and won’t have any sun exposure, Dr. Evans applies SoCo Enriched Night Cream. It counteracts the effects of inflammation, oxidative stress, and glycation.

P.M. Routine: Right Before Bed


Since mascara and other waterproof eye makeup is the toughest to remove, Dr. Evans starts her evening routine with Avene Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. Because it’s a gel, it doesn’t drip. It’s also non-irritating and can be used with Latisse (which Dr. Evans also applies in the evening after thoroughly washing her face).


She then uses SoCo Glycolic Cream Wash again (but only on her face) to remove the day’s dirt, sweat, oil, and makeup. After wetting her face, she gently massages the cleanser around with her fingertips and makes sure to rinse it off thoroughly. Never go to bed with a dirty face!


After that, she repeats part of her a.m. routine with SoCo Eye Serum and SkinMedica TNS Serum.


Dr. Evans completes her regimen with SoCo Night Repair Cream (which works well with the SkinMedica TNS Serum). SoCo Night Repair contains the highest levels of the most impactful ingredients for dry or aging skin: antioxidants C and E, retinol, hyaluronic acid, and omega-3 fatty acid.

Twice a Week ONLY


Dr. Evans also uses SoCo Skin Scrub twice a week in the shower (after using the Glycolic Cream Wash).


For a light home peel, she uses one of SoCo Skin Free 20% Glycolic Peel Pads for about 10 minutes before washing her face at night. She doesn’t want to overdo it when it comes to exfoliation. She gives her skin time to heal and repair otherwise she might damage and dry her skin further.
