The Best Skin Routine for Busy Moms

Updated: Jul 27, 2020

Juggling kids, a partner and work is a delicate balancing act. Yet, it's important for busy moms to find the time daily to properly care for their skin despite the pressures of family and career.

As a board-certified nurse practitioner trained in dermatology, Ellie Christianson knows the importance of a daily skin routine for maintaining a healthy complexion. But like most busy moms, she understands things can sometimes fall by the wayside when your schedule is overbooked.

However, do not let taking care of your skin fall to the bottom of your list. Your complexion will surely suffer for it.

Avoid poor skin habits by creating a simple skin routine that focuses on three main tasks: cleansing, moisturizing and protecting.

Our former NP Ellie shares her time-saving tips and products to help your skin stay fresh and healthy as a busy mom on-the-go.

Start the Day with a Simple 3-Step Skin Routine

With a jam-packed schedule, you might be wondering how does Ellie carve out that essential “me time” to treat her skin?

Ellie says the secret is keeping your routine simple and tailoring it to your skin type. To save precious time, she streamlines her routine with a very targeted approach to get the maximum results for her efforts.

Ellie, who has mildly sensitive skin, starts the morning messaging a gentle cleanser on her wet face to remove dead skin cells. After thoroughly rinsing off her face, she applies Vitamin C cream to her skin. It is the perfect anti-aging antioxidant for a brighter and younger-looking complexion.

Before heading out the door to drop-off kids and see her patients, Ellie applies a daily SPF. She prefers EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 to shield her skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Using sunscreen daily and reapplying it throughout the day when outdoors is a self-care tip Ellie regularly gives her patients.

Go to Bed with a Clean Face

After a stressful day of work and shipping kids from one activity to the next, you might be tempted to skip washing your face and head straight to bed for some much-needed shut eye. Don’t do it! Never go to bed with a dirty face. You’re just asking for clogged pores and breakouts.

Before bed, Ellie suggests using a gentle pH-balancing cleanser to remove dirt, oil and makeup from your skin without irritating it. This is particularly important if you have sensitive or rosacea-prone skin.

After a nightly face washing and when time permits, Ellie likes to use Revision Skincare Black Mask for a purifying facial treatment to clean out pores and promote a glowing complexion.

Lastly, Ellie suggests using a hydrating cream to increase cell and collagen production while you sleep. Since Ellie has sensitive skin, she uses a light non-comedogenic moisturizer to soothe, hydrate, and protect tender skin. Then off to bed she goes with a clean face!
